Salinity and soil degradation are key constraints to sustainable crop production in arid environments. This study evaluated the effects of three organic fertilization amendments- compost, cattle manure, and chicken manure- compared to mineral NPK fertilization (control treatment) on the yield, and quality of two fodder beet varieties (Jaune Cylindrique and Brigadier) in sandy loam-textured soil in Egypt under alternate fresh and saline irrigation water conditions. Two-season split- plot field experiments revealed that the control treatment exhibited stronger performance (root diameter, root length, and fresh and dry root and leaf yields) in the first season compared to other treatments, whereas cattle manure significantly improved plant physiological parameters, yield components, and forage quality, outperforming mineral fertilization in the second season. Notably, cattle manure increased protein and fiber yields in roots and leaves by 125.5%, 181.3%, 143.2%, and 102.6%, respectively, compared to the mineral control. Varietal performance differed significantly, with Brigadier showing higher adaptability to organic treatments. The Brigadier variety outperformed the Jaune Cylindrique variety in protein and fiber yields in roots and leaves in both seasons. These results suggest that cattle manure is a sustainable alternative to mineral fertilizers, improving crop performance in saline-affected agroecosystems.
